There could be two dozen new, high value uses for Pt and Pd - but they would not add up to 5% of current auto use. The auto catalyst use is over 80%.

There are two potential BIG uses -

Fuel cells - especially fuel cells that can use natural gas or methanol. Fuel cells can often covert 50 to 70 percent of energy to electricity, compared to about 27-30% for the best turbo diesels.

Doubling or tripling effective gas mileage would be a massive market, especially for large trucks, and could justify a much higher price for Pt and Pd -

Synthetic fuels - Gas to liquids, coal to liquids, hydrogen production and storage, etc. Pretty large volume here also, enough to keep the price up for a long time.

Look at the sudden jump in progress in superconductor maximum temperature -

Superconductivity is affected by the outer electron shells, similar to catalytic properties.

This change could be much faster than the replacement of photo grahic film by digital cameras. Silver survived that loss, but it has hurt silver prices for a long time..
