Mary,

I just hope 90% on this planet are smart enough to spend this $1000 on some decent food and clothing, rather than give in to some marketing hype about a sub $1000 computer that's not going to do anything useful for them.

Your typical $999 + monitor computer - Compaq Presario with Pentium 166 MMX has a CPU more powerful than top of the line CPU 1 year ago, which was Pentium Classic 200. People have done, and still do get a lot of productive work done on those machines.

I don't know what changed over last year that would suddenly make these machines useless.

The $799 + monitor Compaq Presario with MediaGX 180 has performance of the top of the line PCs from about a year and a half ago - Pentium 150 - Pentium 166.

The last major software release was Windows 95. When it was released, all the computers were less powerful than today's $1,000 machines.

Joe
