Sometimes backyard mechanics are good and sometimes not. I've had both.

My father in law's ego is tied to the dealer where he has dealt since God made the world. He swears by the dealer and they treat him well. He in turn talks them up every chance he gets.

I've taken two independents to court. Won one, lost one.

The good independents can't be beat. I had a good one in Juneau, and have a good one here. Unfortunately, he's too far away from the problem truck to bring it to him.

Very fortunately, my son is knowledgeable and helps me a great deal over the phone and actually working on my truck. He's a real craftsman. He learned that by taking his Hot Wheels apart when he was a toddler, and then my bicycle and other things when he got a little older. He failed to put them back together, but I forgive him now because of all the help he's been.
