NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Compaq Computer Corp.'s strong September performance in retail outlets pushed the company past Toshiba Corp. for the first time in total monthly U.S. sales of notebook computers, according to a market research firm. The results suggest Toshiba's longtime notebook market leadership is being challenged, said Matt Sargent, analyst at Computer Intelligence in San Diego. Because of strong sales earlier in the year, Toshiba is still expected to be No. 1 in annual sales, he said. Compaq's strength in September came after it released new products in August and because of a marketplace anamoly in which retail sales of notebook units exceed sales through resellers that mainly serve businesses. In the overall notebook market, Compaq's September market share was 28.8%, compared with 25.3% for Toshiba and 18.2% for International Business Machines Corp. In retail sales, Compaq had a 42.4% market share and Toshiba had a 24.3% share. In September 1996, Toshiba led the overall U.S. notebook market with a 41.5% share, followed by IBM at 19.8% and Compaq at 17.3%. Toshiba, the only Japanese maker to dominate a major U.S. PC market, has worked to protect its status as the world's top supplier of notebooks. Compaq, the world's top supplier of desktop personal computers, has cut prices and made other moves in an effort to capture market share. Compaq led the notebook market until 1994, when it lost market share to Toshiba. Many other notebook players have been quickly lowering prices and adding features in an effort to increase sales. Notebooks are a rapidly growing and very lucrative segment of the PC market. But the Gartner Group Inc., an influential consulting and market-research firm, a few months ago issued a report warning of a "quality crisis" in the notebook industry.
