It is not a question of it they want us to me. The question is it in our best interest.

I think we should fear more when they DON'T WANT us..

At that time we'll have little, or no, influence.

Isolationism is an attractive utopia that is no longer a viable situation for us.

We cannot sit back and let other nations nuke one another.

Is there any doubt that, were the US not a restraining element in Palestine, Israel would be highly tempted to turn Damascus and Tehran into "Obsidian-Paved Parking Lots"?

One of the things that Mish has failed to mention is since WWII the US has been one of the biggest facilitators of decolonization. We essentially forced both the British and French (minus that event in Vietnam) to dissolve their overseas holdings.

And no.. our efforts haven't been without controversy in some countries. But there are more democracies now than at any previous time. And they aren't perfect, but neither was ours 200 years ago.

Our lot is to use our economic, military, and political power to further democratic change around the world. And when we fail to do so, the odds are pretty great that there will be substantial "blowback" at some point in the future.

Capitalism flourishes best under democratic governments. Under any other form of government Capitalism becomes Corporatism and Oligopoly.

Democracy, when fully unleashed and protected by constitutional law and a professional military and police service, makes both governments and corporations accountable to the needs of the people.
