Don't know, my notebooks were always plugged into a A/C adapters. Never used them on battery. I used notebooks so I could take office work home with me.

That was true for older Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) batteries - they suffered from the memory effect. But it definitely is not true for the newer Lithium-Ion batteries which should never be allowed to fully discharge.
