I read an essay by John Steinbeck recently, and I'd have sworn he just wrote it about how things are going downhill fast and that changes better happen soon or it will be too late; but he didn't just write it because he's dead. He wrote it in the mid 60s. I think the only time the world ain't gonna end for a lot of people is when they've been sucked into a mania. Maybe that's why manias are so attractive to so many people -- it's a relief from the reality that we're all gonna die in a world that's totally farked <g>
