Company Press Release
New Ampex Automated Tape Library Model Also Offers Expansion Module Capability
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1997--

Newest DST Storage System Delivers 40MB/Second

Sustained Data Transfer Rate

Ampex Corp. unveiled the newest member of its DST automated tape library product line at the SEG International Expo here Monday.

The new DST 712 system features a maximum storage capacity of 5.8TB in 7.5 square feet of floor space -- or the equivalent of 770GB per square foot. Intended initially to fill the gap between a DST 412 and DST 812 system, which hold 2.4TB and 12.8TB, respectively, Ampex will soon also offer an expansion module version of the DST 712 system to support the future storage requirements of DST 812 customers. It will then be possible to add capacity on a cost-efficient, incremental basis.

The company's innovative technology reduces the cost per megabyte of storage to less than 3 cents, simplifies media management and lowers overhead by reducing the need to track and house large numbers of cartridges. The storage density increase also improves file access times as well as backup and restore speeds by minimizing cartridge exchanges.

While delivering higher capacity and lower cost of storage, the new standalone DST 712 system also provides superior performance for an automated cartridge library. For example, it can utilize up to two tape transports, each transferring data at high speeds, for a total of an uncompressed 40MB/second or more than 140GB/hour.

In its expansion module configuration, it will attach to a DST 812 system or expand an existing DST 712 system with or without drives. An unlimited number of modules may be added, each storing from 3.2TB to 6TB depending on the number of drives included. Initial shipments will commence by the end of the first quarter, 1998 and pricing has not yet been determined.

The Ampex SEG Expo exhibit will also include a demonstration of the company's implementation of Legato Systems' NetWorker enterprise storage management applications. When fully integrated and supported by Networker 4.2.5 for Unix or Windows NT, Ampex DST tape systems are ideal for a variety of data-intensive applications in both emerging and enterprise environments. These include archive and retrieval for data warehousing, backup and restore of very large databases (VLDB), hierarchical storage management (HSM) of network file systems, as well as storage of multimedia content and high bandwidth data acquisition.

The Ampex DST product line also includes: the DST 312 standalone tape drive which can automatically accommodate 50GB, 150GB and 330GB cartridge sizes; DST 412 automated cartridge library which can store 2.4TB of data on seven cartridges and occupies less than 8 square feet of floor space; and DST 812 automated cartridge library which can store up to 12.8TB of data while providing a data throughput of 80MB per second via four drives.

The new DST 712 has a base list price of $150,000 for the single-drive configuration and $240,000 for the dual-drive configuration. Availability is 30 days ARO. Information on Ampex DST tape systems is available at www.ampex.com or by E-mailing sales@ampex.com.
