Excellent post!! Nicely written..

And I hope by "Islamists" you mean the fundamentalist/militants and not all Muslims. I think that man interprets a faith to derive what they need. And I don't think the majority of Muslims have the desire to force people to convert (maybe I'm wrong).

My issue with Iraq is that what we did in 2003 is what we SHOULD HAVE DONE in 1991.

We permitted a outright aggression of such magnitude to take place that it required a united effort of the UNSC to "authorize" the use of military force to make Iraq withdraw.

Our delays only made matter worse, just as they are in Lebanon and Iran (though internal protests make the latter situation look better).

We did the same thing in Afghanistan, bailing out after the Soviets retreated and permitting the country to fall into utter chaos.

We're now in a situation where the price we have to pay is going to increase exponentially if we don't become involved. The level of poverty and lack of education and skills (other than fighting) have got to be resolved. We have to provide these people a reason to hope and seek to be part of the world community, or they will tear it down and create one of their own.

But ultimately, this is going to be a struggle between moderate Muslims and militants. But the moderates are going to need a lot of help, both military and economic.

But we also have to be sure that we don't make our assistance a "blank check" into a bad investment. We have to get some positive returns that help to permanently resolve the despair in these countries.

"Even the most religious in America don't hold a candle to the kind of ferocious religiosity that many, many people have in the Middle East and parts of Africa."

Is that so? Look at all these religious Americans wearing burkas to hide their faces as they uphold their idea of..... "American ideals"
youtube.com

All your post goes to show is that the world would be a safe and peaceful place if America changed its values.

How about this stupid comment?
"If the Islamists get a nuclear weapon, they will use it. No doubt about it."

Pakistan is Islamist and has nuclear bombs and hasn't used them
Potentials are Egypt, Syria, and Iran. The only country on earth that has ever used them is the USA so that shoots down your argument. Question.....did you even think before you wrote that garbage?
