RE: When will SparQ be available?

Actually, they say "November" in their first press release:

Starting in November, the SparQ product will be available through national retail chains, including Best Buy, CompUSA, Computer City, Egghead, Fry's and Micro Center as well as VARs, commercial distributors and mail order outlets.

Oddly, when searching all of the online computer stores (even those mentioned on SyQuest's web site as sources for SparQ), there's no sign of it on their systems. Only only place had one item related to SparQ (a three-pack of SparQ cartridges mispriced for $1059.99).

I've sold 3/4 of my trading shares in IOM. (Maybe too early, but you never know... You can never lose when you sell at a profit!)

I called syqt today and were told I could purchase right now and it would be shiped in 3-4 days. At this price, it is not only a threat to jaz, but also to zip as zip+ is priced exactly at $199. Plain internal zip is available for $99. I'm afraid that IOM will cut price and negatively effect IOM's earning in near term. Long term, it increases awareness of removable drives vs HD. It may not be a bad thing for IOM. The market certainly can sustain two vendors.

Don't know what technology sqyt is using and hope it can make a nice profit at this price. Hope sqyt executes well this time around. It has iom's marketing team working over there.(ws)

>>Note how the SYQT announcement carefully avoids mentioning when you'll be able
>>to buy this wonder drive. Curiously their latest announcement
>>at biz.yahoo.com suggests that
>>they'll donate 100 of these drives to a school in November 1998.

My favorite part of this release is: ''Everyone has a creative spark inside them,'' said Gary Marks, executive vice president of marketing for SyQuest. ''This contest gives SparQ owners a chance to express that creativity.''

I think Syquest should win the contest for making up the most creative nonexistent product!

Also, I noticed something else interesting in the release: Since 1982, the company has shipped more than 16 million cartridges that people use to expand their ideas and creations. SyQuest (SYQT) is publicly traded on the NASDAQ's National Market System.

Note the statistic: 16 million cartridges! With over 9 million Zip drives sold and 1 million Jaz drives sold, I can't even imagine the number of IOM's cartridges sold. Anybody know? Including the original Iomega/Bernoulli drives, IOM should be quickly approaching selling 16 million drives!

Finally, I remember somebody mentioning that IOM has probably made extensive studies of ideal price points for certain products. So what is the deal with the Sparq? Does anybody know how it is possible?
