Peak Oil will increase ridership on the New York subways and other transit systems. If Peak Oil doesn't hit soon with soaring gas prices, then Israel is almost surely going to strike Iran this year and cause a major jump in oil and gas prices as chaos ensues in the Middle East. Cities with major transit system will fare much better in a post-peak oil world. Anyone who lives in the urban sprall cities with no transit better start rethinking their plan.

I doubt the cut to student free passes is going to happen. A last minute deal will save the free student ride, for just the reasons cited in the story. New York typically finds money for such things at the last minute.
