Please note regarding China bear: "his detractors say that he knows little or nothing about China or its economy and that his bearish calls should be ignored.

Yeah.. that's the problem.. if you can't access the market to borrow stock, you have a hard time shorting it.

So you'll have to partner with a Chinese firm, put capital in, and short China from inside (now that they've apparently legalized shorting there).

And any shorts are susceptible to squeezing by government intervention.
