Today I could not go to a celebration of the USMC amphibious feats in the South Pacific because I'm sick. It was in Montana and normally I would have driven over because the REAL purpose is to honor my Pard's father, who made three amphibious landings including Peleliu and two others. He was with the Old Breed, the First Marine Division. Their exploits were written up in With The Old Breed by E. B. Hammer, and Goodbye Darkness by William Manchster. When we were kids, my pard and I would go through the Old Breed's 'year book' and then go out on the river and relive those battles with our cap guns. Both of us slid by Nam because of valid reasons, and I always thought I missed something. Long time ago.
