I gather that is the original way to make it, then grew into a casserole dinner dish...

I grew up on the dinner dish in Texas and then beyond, but didn't have it in a bag of fritos until Visalia in central California... which is kinda like being in west or southwest Texas.

It's called "Frito Pie" and certainly it can be dressed up with cheese, onion, and jalapeño if you have a partial to hot. :)
