Interesting.....I wrote that sentence from the point of view of what christianity preaches on killing/murder (at least from my interpretation of it). Your answer is not what I expected.

Your reply with regards to "alpha male" hierarchy is very interesting in the sense that it describes very much a primordial more nature based philosophy. It describes perfectly the "religion" of nature and in a sense pretty much how we (mankind) function. Sure, we have various philosophies and religions that espouse compassion and kindness to the lesser and weaker amongst us (that's what makes us human) but when it comes down to true power, it's the law of nature that dominates.

<<The basis of "Inalienable Rights" as specified in the US Declaration of Independence REQUIRES the belief in a deity for that are "natural" or "god-given" rights.>>

I don't believe that one is REQUIRED to believe in a deity in order to believe in "natural rights". The statement "god-given" can be argued against in the sense that the existence of god needs to be proven in order to justify its validity. We all know nature exists but there are many that don't believe god exists.

Hawk, those are the only rights I have ever come across:

<Otherwise, any rights a human being has are only those which other men/women have permitted them to possess.>

And those rights are VERY limited. They are essentially the right to do anything which is specifically permitted after doing those things which are compulsory. A fee is payable to the government for doing any of those things I wish to do which are specifically permitted at particular times, after gaining a written permit.

Everything else is forbidden.

If those are God-given rights, God is an extremely mean-minded megalomaniac.

<The basis of "Inalienable Rights" as specified in the US Declaration of Independence REQUIRES the belief in a deity for that are "natural" or "god-given" rights.>

Perhaps we should ask who actually spoke to God and got the list of those rights which I am allowed to do after getting said government permit.

Maybe there was something lost in translation. Maybe God wasn't speaking in English or American but it sounded like it but was sort of confusing to the interpreter who transcribed things incorrectly.

Just exactly where is the list of rights which were given to Helen Clark and Barack Obama and other rulers who enforce that list? And how come the rights vary from place to place. Heck, even within the USA, those rights vary from state to state and even city to city as the local yokels make up their own bylaws which are surely not all translated directly from said "God-given" edicts.

I think we should start again. We'll need somebody who is good at languages to give God a call and ask Him to re-enunciate said rights so we can get them clear please. How do we contact him? Phone? I don't have his number.

If we do it on Skype, we could all have a conference call. Heck if he'd appear on Fox and Friends, or The Daily Show, we could all get the same message together so there would be no misunderstandings.

With modern communications, it wouldn't mean one bloke going up a mountain to get The Word and engraving the words on a stone tablet or papyrus. There would be fewer transcription errors.
