Japan is understandable given what they did in WWII. No one wants to see Japan arm themselves again (though North Korea might force Japan to do just that).

They're not going to "pay their share." They'll be more than happy to let our enemies attack us while they stay out of the way. Look at Spain cutting and running after their 3/11.

We are responsible for our security. The fact that other countries can "free ride" is a testament to American exceptionalism. Of course, many Americans resent the concept of exceptionalism, especially liberals.
