McCracken Out at SGI
As widely expected, Silicon Graphics Inc. [SGI] CEO Edward McCracken turned in his resignation last week, following the company's decision to eliminate up to 1,000 jobs in the face of sagging sales. The company reported a net loss of 55.5 million for the most recent quarter compared to $21.6 million for the same period a year earlier. Charges contributing to the net loss were $17 million related to the company's acquisition of ParaGraph International and an additional $2 million in merger-related expenses. SGI is planning a $50 million charge related to the layoffs, with the expectation that they will reduce expenses by $40 million per quarter next year. (SGI, 415/933-1980.)

Trident Stakes Out PCI
Trident Microsystems Inc. expects to have the lowest priced, single-chip PCI audio controller on the market in mass quantities early next year. Dubbed the 4DWaveDX, the technology integrates a 64-voice wavetable synthesizer with Qsound Lab technology that provides chorus, reverb and echo effects. The chip features DirectSound and DirectSound 3D acceleration and can support desktop and notebook designs. It will be available for $8.50 in quantities of 50,000. (Trident, 650/943-3761.)
