Doesn't mean we should just stay there forever, but it does demostrate how the notion of cut-n-run born out of ignorance is just plain wrong.

57 years since the war ended is a lot closer to "forever" than to "cut and run".

The fact is that we can't afford to do many of the things we could afford in the past. So choices now have to be made. We should start with a global reassessment of who is capable of defending themselves and pull back our resources and refocus on fast attack and special forces capabilities. Rumsfeld was right. I don't know why we didn't continue to move in that direction. It was the smart thing to do.
