Bill,

I thought Riva 128 bit nvidia is like 220 3D Winmarks. GX3
has to offer at least 2x performance of the Riva128 to take
back the sockets S3 lost at STBI and DIMD to nVidia. If it
is only the same performance as you believe, then what
compelling reason is there to switch back to S3 for the
major card vendors? Its not easy to switch chip suppliers.
nVidia offered 2-3x performance over GX2 and that was probably
the compelling reason that DIMD & STBI dumped S3.

As for Vortex, I thought this was supposed to be a more high-end
graphics architecture to compete with the pure 3D playerss TDDDF,
TDFX and Lockheed Real3D. I believe GJ spoke of a brand new
architecture in development since the Virge had basically run
out of steam. This I took as the Vortex (ie different than the
Virge ?X? naming scheme).
