I was curious about exactly HOW that would HAPPEN though... ("apparently the 'whole country' got together centuries ago and 'swore a pact with the Devil'..."). I mean, was there a big open-air camp meeting for the whole country or something? Celestial signs? Ole Scratch go door-to-door? (Though --- as per your suggested addition of 'politicians in Washington' selling their souls to the Devil --- I'm fairly sure that most of those transactions would actually happen in a cushy cigar bar or steak house... all set up by, and paid for, by well-heeled corporate lobbyists. :-)
