Dave:

Thanks!

Assume it is CUBE. The reason that TOSHIBA does not want CUBE to announce the deal is that TOSHIBA may have its own solution in the near future, or plainly because marketing reason?

Let us hope it is true.

Blockbuster is readying DVD rental rollout.............................

BLOCKBUSTER WEIGHS WIDE DVD ROLLOUT
(by Martin Levine)

Blockbuster Entertainment is poised to begin merchandising DVD nationally, according to DVD software and hardware executives. Although negotiations are ongoing, preliminary plans call for Blockbuster to add DVD to 500 stores during first quarter 1998 and expand that to 1,000 stores nationwide by yearend. Putting DVD in 1,000 of Blockbuster's approximately 4,000 U.S. stores would give the format ample exposure across the country. To date, Blockbuster has stocked DVD only on an experimental basis in roughly 50 stores.

Company officials could not be reached for comment on DVD merchandising plans.

Sources said Warner Home Video is deeply involved in discussions with Blockbuster about the chain's national DVD rollout. But Warner president Warren Lieberfarb declined to comment on any direct involvement between the two, saying that "it would be premature" to say Blockbuster has plans to expand its presence in DVD.

The obstacle to an agreement is tied mainly to participation of DVD-player manufacturers, according to several sources. "What Blockbuster is looking for is a hardware partner to support in-store P.O.P. activities," including the use of players for demo kiosks and possibly a player-rental program, one hardware executive said.

If Blockbuster insists that players be provided at a subsidized cost for a rental program, that could become a deal breaker, according to one hardware executive who has talked to Big Blue. The chain is believed to be talking with Sony, Panasonic and Toshiba.
