The book 'Collapse' by Jared Diamond has a couple of interesting chapters on Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The French really messed up the Haiti side of the island. They started the deforestation, brought in huge numbers of African slaves, who eventually managed to run them out. Haiti lost most of its topsoil in the 1800s. Hard to live on land without topsoil.
A horrible tragedy in progress there, but its been tragic in Haiti for a long time.

We keep farming the way we do in the Midwest, our topsoil will wind up in the Gulf of Mexico. Between that and the depletion of the Ogalla Aquifer, our agricultural prospects aren't so great in this country either.

I've flown over Haiti/Dom Republic. The contrast from the air is breathtaking. Haiti looks like a wasteland.
