Of course the name helped. But you're right - Bush 41 had no hand in the deal at all. Eddie Chiles wanted out and GWB was instrumental in getting the partners together.

The allegation has been made that the partners just "gave" GWB another 10% interest for no reason whatsoever. These were people with money and they didn't get money by just "giving away" portions of their equity. The claim is absurd. GWB was instrumental in making it happen and they knew it and that's where the extra 10% came from.

The franchise turned around very quickly due in no small part to the presence of Nolan Ryan. Before Ryan we would go to games and the park would be empty. After Ryan was there, it was a totally different thing. And the new stadium reinvigorated the club as well.

This happened while GWB was running the organization so it isn't surprising he did well with his $500K investment.

Yes, Brumar, you're right. All Bush wanted was freedom for the poor Iraqi people. I understand he wept himself to sleep nite after nite praying that such freedom would be possible in his lifetime.

The Halliburton contracts were the same sort of support work done by the company in the Balkans and many other places. The idea the Iraq war was waged so that HAL could make profits running commisaries and shipping goods around Iraq is silly.

The independence of Kurds in awarding oil development contracts has nothing to do with the issue of why America didn't steal Iraq's oil as liberals claim we went to Iraq to do. Baghdad, Kurdistan - we could steal oil from one area as well as the other.

As for Bush, there's no evidence Bush's Dad did anything to help him get in on the Rangers deal. Though I have no doubt his family name helped.

Now as for the elder George Bush, his uncle DID help him get his first job out of college selling for an oil service firm.

As for the Bush-Obama comparison, both went to elite prep schools. Punahou was and is the most expensive such school in HA. Is it less prestigious than wherever Bush went? Who knows or cares. The point is BOTH had a privileged education.
