Oh, no! Her spine must cause her constant pain. Is she a candidate for fusion?

Why wasn't there someone there to help her? Falling once is bad enough, but twice? Does she have regular insurance or Medicare and a supplement? I'm wondering how much what she has costs versus Medicare and a supplement....Maybe when you have time, you can talk to the social worker and the billing supv to get some info on what we all are going to have to deal with..now and in the future.

But that aside, the most important thing is, how is she getting along? Is the pain under control? I'm so very sorry you both are having to go through this...would a get well card or something like that help her?

I know that the best magazine to 'read' isn't something serious... the most I could concentrate on was that US magazine...pictures and a few words of people who don't matter much...People magazine is at the high end of the attention span for awhile, so you can know how the pain pills numb your brain....A few pretty flowers is a visual treat too...I've always thought that a few flowers in the hospital were much better than a whole big bunch....they die too quickly because of the heat, so it's nice to just enjoy the few... One of the most wonderful gifts is a body lotion in a scent that she enjoys...We women always want to look better outside, even though we feel like h*ll on the inside....

Sending you both lots of warm thoughts!

her lower spine is a mess - disks ruptured or almost nonexistent

Geez. One insult heaped on top of another. Almost more than one person can take.

She'll recover from the hip fracture (if she doesn't fall on it again) pretty quickly. The back situation isn't good at all. Will take a little more time.

We all feel for the both of you and send as many good wishes as possible.

I agree with adding things that smell good. There's nothing worse than the smell of a facility that uses all those chemicals to kill the germs. Something like Chanel #5 body cream, not only smells good but feels good.

I'll bet she'd like to get cards. You can PM the address of the facility to those of us who ask. Put me down on the list.

Oh No! I surely do know what those back pains are like. I ruptured a disk about 10 yrs ago and was in really bad pain. I went to a very competent spine doc and she got be fixed up with meds and an excellent therapist. I know our bones degenerate over time, and we all have bulging disks in our backs, but it's the L-4 L-5 disk that presses on the sciatica and causes so much pain. There is one or two in the neck that do the same thing.

I am so thankful for pain meds. I end up taking 1/2 of one occasionally if I've had to sit for too long, and I tell you.........I need that. My doc told me pain meds were invented to relieve pain and not to worry about becoming "addicted." I take one approx every 3-4 months but that's because I've learned exercises and methods to keep my back healthy.

Lynne is going to go through quite a learning curve in the next months.

Let us know if there is anything we can do.

M

Best of thoughts to her. I gather there is not much worse than the bone-on-bone, so I hope they can work something out for her.

and as someone mentioned, a deck of cards, if she cares for solitaire, at all. and light reading. it can be hard to concentrate when pain is there, so that light reading can do the best.

They should have performed a fall assessment on her upon admission. The outcome is used to determine whether the patient is allowed to exit the bed alone, etc.

I've handled at least 3 cases where patients were injured trying to take themselves to the bathroom.

About Lynne: Where are the nurses who are overseeing this Manor? Two falls in two days sounds a bit much.

Jeez, David. When it rains it pours. I can tell you from personal experience that you'll be up to the challenge in front of you, and finally ... Someday this will all be over.
