Mindmeld, > The Evangelicals, on the other hand, seem like a lunatic fringe to me with their theories that the Earth was magically created 10,000 years ago despite all the scientific evidence.

The first problem is the label you use. To me, "evangelical" means nothing more than going out and converting people. Lots of religions and denominations are very evangelical. Catholicism is very evangelical. Hindus are very evangelical. Muslims are as well. I've noticed that some atheists are now becoming evangelical in their godless beliefs. (Then there are the evangelical environmentalists like Al Gore ...)

The second problem is that you take your experiences in Texas and apply them to the entire religion itself. No, you're just experiencing one subculture of the religious movement. Like I said, I have yet to see any church that I've attended on a regular basis fit the profile that you are describing.

The third problem is that you went to Catholic school. In my experience, some of the most anti-Christian people I've come across in my life went to Catholic school as a kid. Shouldn't be a surprise to me. Repressive environments usually lead to rebellion.
