Will Haiti become our next Afghanistan? The conditions in Haiti are much worse than anyone thought just 48 hours ago. Cities and towns within 2 hours of the capital are in very bad condition....many are leveled like the capital. I could easily see the death toll climb to 200K. They say that a third of the P-au-P population is without housing. That's roughly 700K minus 150K dead....or 550K people. All those people need housing. I suspect there is no housing industry of any size in Haiti. So who is going to build all that housing? And where do the people stay until that housing is built? Adding to the problem is the need for building materials. Given that Haiti is in a seismic zone, it needs to rebuild housing with wood, not the current masonry they seem to use a lot. However, Haiti has deforested its mts. It has no trees to turn into 2 by 4s and plywood. Where does it get the wood? The US? And how do they pay for it?

And that is just one aspect of a huge and complex problem facing the country. I understand the US had to take the lead but I hope Obama plays this one smartly.

CJ, > You seem to be forgetting the financial sector.

One really huge exception to the rule.

But yeah, I figure if they're going to get taxpayer-funded bailouts, they should shut up when the Obama administration wants to hit them with compensation limits. Or make a big fuss about junkets to luxury resorts. Or even impose additional taxes.

Can't have it both ways.
