"Pope Greg is nothing but an ignorant bigot" He is a fundamentalist Christian of the fanatical strain, certainly. This makes it necessary for him to support absurdities, cruelties, irrationalities and (as you say) ignorance and bigotry. I am sure he is more than the characterization you attribute to him but his core premise controls and guides his every thought and action. He has thus lost the ability to form beliefs and arguments framed by a common rationalism. Rather, all his beliefs flow directly from a primitive dogma and they brook no interference from thought in any form. It must be a frightening way to navigate from the cradle to the grave...
