Yeah, but IBM was stupid. Hell, they couldn't see the PC revolution coming even after it had started. They had one view of what a computer was and had no freaking clue. Lots of people did. I can give lots of examples.

It doesn't change the facts, which were that integrated circuits and microprocessors happened based on markets, not government injections of cash. Not only that, both TI and Fairchild were working on the IC simultaneous -- so, there was actually honest-to-god competition underway.

Some basic research is needed and I have no problem with it. But the real breakthroughs happen at places like Intel, Genetech, AT&T Bell Labs, etc., where money is at stake.
