They left Arkansas because of labor costs. Government welfare became too much competition for the manufacturers there. No one wanted to work at the factory when you could get a check, sleep in and watch TV all day. Those companies who are making it have imported Asian and Mexican workers.

There was no single cause but deregulation was a major contributing factor.
