"Fusion voting" used to be the RULE in nearly ALL the States.

In the nineteenth century it was the main way that new political parties gained strength and grew.

When they were initially too small to field enough candidates for all the slots they would (if they chose to) *endorse* whichever of the big party candidates that came the closest to their principles.

This way, members of the party could pull the lever for their Party's candidates (say... pull the lever for the "Wig Party", or the "Libertarian Party", or the "Tea Party", or what-have-you), and not fear that their vote had been "wasted".

Also --- whichever candidate actually then won the election could CLEARLY SEE where his support came from!

(And... if, say, his winning margin actually came from supporters of one of the "minor" parties like the Conservative Party or whatever... the winning candidate might very well then be a bit more receptive to the ideas and principles of that party --- seeing as how he would not be in office without them, and might not win reelection without their support!)

That was the traditional way that small parties grew to be big parties. But the Dems and Reps got laws passed in 49 of the 50 states making "fusion voting" ILLEGAL so they could freeze out any potential competition.

So, there is only ONE STATE LEFT with anything even approaching a viable third political party. It is New York State and the party is the Conservative Party and it *only survives* because that is the only state in the whole union where Fusion Voting is still legal.
