Those things are all part and parcel of Virtuous Victorian Values. Good boats, good sailors, good captains and good guns don't just happen by accident. But they were a minor part of what made the success. Migration to the other side of the planet would not have been possible without them.

In NZ, the Maoris had by far the numbers and could have removed or killed and eaten the British any time [until the numbers increased]. But it was like today with the Chinese migrants swarming in far faster than the British did in the 19th century and we are welcoming them and their cash flow just as the Maoris did back in the day. The same result will occur - the NZ culture and population will be subsumed in the mass of foreigners.

No doubt the Maoris thought they had the superior numbers and control just as "we" do now. But that's a mirage which will gradually shift in favour of the immigrants. Give it another few decades and Mandarin will be a dominant language if not the dominant language.

Already there are plenty of shops which don't bother with English signs. Increasingly, businesses have to have the ability to trade in Chinese.

Of course China has vastly more military strength than does NZ, but that's not the mechanism for takeover.

Unfortunately, unlike the British, China doesn't bother with British common law, habeas corpus, elections and silly old Virtuous Victorian Values so people living here are going to get a shock when their culture is steam rolled out of existence.

When people migrate to a new place in great numbers, they don't adopt the new culture, they bring their old culture with them. A few individuals will adapt and adopt the new ways because they are surrounded by it [the children if not the adults] but when hundreds of thousands move in, they deal with each other and see no need to change.

The average Kiwi wouldn't have a clue that they are the new Maoris. By the time they wake up, it'll be too late. They are giving the place away without even requiring payment. It's quite absurd but that's people for you.

A new Chinese migrant instantly acquires ownership of $2 million in assets with no payment whatsoever. If there were tradable citizenships, the value would be recognized and newbies would have to pay for what they are getting. No wonder there are swarms looking for possession of such value.
