Great article by Sowell, but then that's not exactly a surprise; I've come to expect quality from him.

That some of the causes for the depression being as bad and as long as it was, came to be viewed as what saved us from total collapse during the depression, is a real tragedy. That idea has been a factor in all sorts of perverse and counterproductive economic intervention, and has been harmful to our freedom and prosperity every since. But Democrats, and even some Republicans fail to recognize how false the FDR as economic savior meme is, and anyone who tries to present the truth is blasted as an inflexible unthinking ideologue.

Now with Obama, Pelosi, Reid, et al, the idea that government can save us by managing the economy is back in force. Hopefully Brown's election (along with some earlier elections and the Tea Parties), represent the start of chasing that idea away from dominance of the political scene.

Here's the link to the entire series of excepts from Sowell's new book, "Intellectuals and Society".

The one you quoted is the last so far, I'm not sure if there is going to be any more.

The excerpts make it seem like a good book to buy.

Right now I'm reading two other books which I recommend. Free to Chose by Milton and Rose Friedman, and "How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media... Give Me A Break" by John Stossel.
