I understand the definition, but the problem with the GOP calling the Dems socialist, is that it's the pot calling the kettle black.

Sort of, its like the pot calling the darker kettle black, when they are both black.

The Democrats mostly support those types of policies through word and deed.

The Republicans are split. Some support extending government with word and deed. Many more with just their actions but not their words. While others are far less statist.

You can reasonably attack the Republicans for being more hypocritical on this, OTOH perhaps hypocrisy really isn't as bad as open enthusiasm for the practice, and also not all the Republicans talking about small government are hypocritical. That's esp. true if your talking about their policies on future government expansions.
