Even though Brumar (a member of the goose-stepping GOSPEL party) tells us that the Smart Grid is a waste of money, tech and utility execs see great benefits to the consumer and the economy and a great business opportunity as well.

Of course utility execs see benefits -- they would be able to charge more money for electricity during peak periods. What's not to like?

The use of superconductors to minimize transmission losses will eventually catch on, but it has taken a long time to get there. And that is one element of what some people call the "smart grid". Very expensive revisions that will take a very long time for the cost to be recovered, I think.

Other than that, what is the benefit to consumers and where is the ROI?
