I would suggest this is obvious. If Obama had played hardball with Lieberman and the few Democratic hold-outs we could have had reasonable improvement to the health care system in our nation. Having chosen not to do this, the resulting bills were far from optimal.

Brown's Senate seat allows Obama to gracefully move on to economic and financial regulatory matters which have a larger consensus.

As medical insurance premiums continue to rise at 15% annually or so the consensus to improve our nation's health care system will make it politically impossible for even the most bought-off lawmakers to oppose - at which time a bill similar to some of the original proposals will be passed and implemented.
