Hawk loves to see US soldiers murdered by his Israeli masters.

Uh.. Sailors.. And the rest is BS!!

But higher command order the Liberty, A SPY SHIP, to move into a zone that THE ISRAELIS HAD WARNED OTHER NATIONS WAS A COMBAT ZONE.

It was stupid for the US command chain to order the Liberty that close, but it also a stupid decisions by whichever Israeli commander who issued those orders to attack (I suspect Dayan because Israel was preparing it's assault on the Golan at the time and they didn't want US intelligence picking up on their preparations).

But let's recognize something.. US support for Israel was not nearly as open in 1967 as it later became in 1973. Most Israeli equipment was either WWII surplus, or French/British in manufacture.

So the Israelis didn't particularly look upon the US as "allies", but more of an inhibiting factor towards defending their interests. Thus, in 1967, Israel likely perceived attacking a meddling US ship in the same manner that they perceived shooting down Russian piloted MIGs in the Egyptian Air Force.

They were warned and they ignored the warnings.

So I really blame US command for sending the Liberty into that danger zone. But I also blame Israeli commanders at that time for such a ridiculous decision when armed escorts would have been more appropriate.
