You are blaming the US command for an Israeli attack that killed American Navy personnel on a USN ship.

Yes.. when they order our ship into an area of combat WITHOUT notifying the combatants of it's presence. That was reckless.

Furthermore, as I recall reading previous, the Liberty's Captain had requested that a US combat ship accompany it.

Furthermore, what was the mission of the Liberty? To spy on Israeli and Egyptian communications. Not a particularly "friendly" act, especially in the middle of active hostilities.

If the CINC of the US Sixth Fleet was unwilling to provide an armed escort ship for the Liberty, it was foolishness to order it there.

Using Sarman's logic, it was the equivalent of giving a "nod" for someone to attack it. But from perspective, it was just stupidity and negligence to send an lightly armed spy ship into hostile waters.

And 34 US sailors were killed because the stupidity and negligence, if not arrogance, on the part of both the US and the Israelis.

There was a whole lot of CYA that transpired after that attack. And IMO, some US Navy Admirals should have lost their jobs over it.

But let me be clear.. I think McGonagle and his crew were heroes who were clearly put in a tenuous and dangerous position.

And I think the Israeli Commander who ordered this attack should have been fired and reprimanded as well..

Instead, both sides decided to cover up the incident and avoid prosecuting the people who were responsible.
