HOWEVER, this relationship only started to develop AFTER 1973. In 1967, Israel DID NOT HAVE THE SAME RELATIONSHIP with the US as it has now. Interests change. Governments change. Alliances change. If it had been a US ally, NO ARAB NATION WOULD HAVE DARED TO ATTACK Israel. And we certainly would not have permitted the Soviets to stir up the entire region with their disinformation campaign. And ssk yourself, if they were our ally, why did we send a SPY SHIP into the middle of their war with Egypt? Why did we ignore their warnings to keep our ships away? Why didn't we have US COMBAT SHIPS in the area to support our "ally"? Why didn't Israel possess top line US Military equipment, but instead were using surplus WWII tanks, and French and British aircraft? And most importantly, why weren't US ships breaking the Egyptian blockade of the Straits of Tiran, what Israel declared was the "Casus Belli" of the entire war? Summation: Israel was NOT a US Ally. Israel was more the ally of France and Britain. And since none of those alliances prevented the 1967 war, or the blockade by the Egyptians. Secondly, ON THE VERY SAME DAY, later in the afternoon when it could no longer be denied that the Liberty was an American ship, the Israelis IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZED and actually flew the US Naval Attache to Israel in a helicopter to look at the damage. Now, had the Israeli Government NOT apologized, it's certain there would have been far more (and much deserved) condemnation against the entire government. No one really has any evidence as to WHO in the Israeli military hierarchy made the decision to attack the Liberty. As I've stated previously, I suspect it was Moshe Dayan (as Defense Minister). Bottom line.. OUR ARROGANT MILITARY COMMAND AT THAT TIME DID NOT INFORM OUR "ALLY" THAT WE HAD A SHIP IN THE AREA. THEY ALSO FAILED TO PROVIDE OUR SPY SHIP THE NECESSARY ARMED ESCORT AND SENT THE SAILORS OF THE LIBERTY INTO A VERY HOSTILE ZONE.. Our men were killed because we stuck our nose into a beehive and the Israeli commander (Dayan?) was not going to permit the US to meddle in how they were conducting their national defense. And the word was that Israel was preparing to finally deal with Syria and they didn't want the US meddling in those plans and trying to prevent them from taking the Golan Heights (from where they had been repeatedly shelled). Again.. A true alliance with the US would have prevented this war from ever occurring in the first place. Or it would have introduced US forces into the area to support and defend our "ally". That's what Allies do, isn't it?Edit......would you try and justify an Iranian attack on a US ship in their waters after several warnings from them of retaliation??? Justify?? NO.. And I don't justify the Israeli attack. They were just "clever" enough have an excuse for "mistakenly" attacking the Liberty. After all, we didn't tell them the ship was there. If we sent a spy ship close to the Iranian shore, in the middle of hostilities, without armed escort, I would blame our own Naval commanders for such a negligent decision. Remember the USS Stark? You folks all claim that Saddam was our ally during the Iran-Iraq war. But one of this aircraft shot two Exocets into one of our cruisers and never explained why, or how, it happened.en.wikipedia.org Shit happens in war.. Especially when we stick our noses into other people's combat zones without informing them of our presence, or willingness to defend ourselves. Hawk
