Whoa!! That's a lot to answer to in one post. Might take a couple.

I can understand why a people with their experiences and in their psychological state would feel that way. But it does not mean that I approve of it.

I totally agree.. and this is the filter I use when perceiving Israel. I'm not Jewish, nor am I a "Zionist". But I can sympathize with the plight of the Jews during their Diaspora. Furthermore, they are the people upon who's faith I base the origin of my own.

But most importantly, they have displayed the will to create their own state and develop it economically and technologically, despite not having many existing natural resources. Furthermore, the form of government they chose was democratic (at least initially for Jews).

Furthermore, I sympathize with them because, the minute they declared their independence, they were assailed by every one of their Arab neighbors who sought to destroy them, yet they defended their new state. That made them the immediate underdog and worth defending, if only because it displayed a "never again" mentality against genocidal maniacs.

And let's face it, there aren't many of us who can sympathize with people who seek to commit genocide against people who just want to have a country to call their own, a sanctuary where any of their people who are oppressed in the countries they reside in, can flee to for safety.

This isn't new.. The US did the same with Liberia, which was primarily inhabited by freed slaves.

Some have asserted that Israel has embarked on a war of genocide against the Palestinians, but the demographics clearly do not bear that out. There are far more Palestinians now than there were in 1948.

The Jews could have opted for a single state solution from the beginning.

Uh.. the Palestinian Arab LEADERSHIP were NOT interested in such an arrangement. They ALSO had the opportunity to declare an independent state, but CHOSE NOT TO DO SO. In the Jericho conference, they CHOSE to unite with Jordan:

Now... recall that previous to the UN partitions, ALL OF THAT LAND was under the control of the Hashimites ruling Tran-Jordan as part of the British Mandate:

Btw, what sad about all this is that in 1919, there was a general agreement, between the Zionists and the Hashimites, to work together to develop Palestine under the administration of the British Mandate. The Hashimites wanted Arab independence for themselves and they perceived that backing Jewish immigration would assist in this.

Additionally, within the Palestinian community was the rivalry between the two largest clans, the al-Husayni (husseini) and the Nashashibi. This struggle is something that's not really covered in most historical analysis of the early years of the Palestinian Mandate. Some interesting reading here:

We can debate until the world ends whether it was proper for the British to permit Jewish immigration. But then again, we can also argue that the British/French should have been required to return all the land they conquered to the Turks.

But let's not just blame this on the Israelis. They were just more organized and forceful about obtaining what they wanted. The Palestinian Arabs in the area were constantly fighting and bickering with each other, as well as the Jews. Thus, they lacked the organization to do anything but request that Jordan annex their territory and make them Jordanian subjects.
