Digital Christmas: Adelphia Launch Counters DBS; NextLevel Slow on Delivery

<Picture><Picture><Picture>

Beating DBS during the holiday rush is the name of the game for Adelphia as it rolls out digital cable to 1.2mln customers by Nov. 15. The MSO said yesterday it introduced "Adelphia Digital Cable" last week to systems in Western New York; suburban Pittsburgh; suburban Philadelphia; Charlottesville, VA; Berkshire, MA; Cleveland; and Dover Township, NJ, where it faces competition from Bell Atlantic [BEL]. By Nov 15, the op expects to bring the service to 1.7mln HH passed in more than 25 systems in order to release the product "before the DSS holiday season," says Michael Rigas, Adelphia exec vp operations. Since the op only has 5K NextLevel [NLV] DCT-1000 boxes available, he expects to put customers on a waiting list. "But we'll have enough for people who might go to DSS," he adds quickly. Another 5K boxes should arrive by the end of the year. The package has up to 17 premium channels; 18 ppv channels from HITS; 40 channels of digital audio from Music Choice; and the Prevue program guide, for an additional $9.95 per month. Adelphia has made its systems digitally capable using many methods: the op has upgraded systems to 750 MHz; shuffled channels to create additional capacity; or installed new equalizers into amplifiers to gain an additional 36 MHz. The op expects to offer the service to nearly all of its 1.8mln customers by the end of '98.

Optibase Aims to Tap Corporate Authoring Market With DVD Fab!
In an effort to make DVD authoring accessible to a new market base, Optibase, Inc. has introduced a new DVD-Video creation system. DVD Fab! is an integrated PC station that encompasses all the steps in DVD creation, from capture and authoring to DVD-R or DLT printing. DVD Fab! can be used to create corporate presentations, interactive movie titles, music videos, multimedia games, karaoke, and educational products. The resulting titles can be played back on consumer DVD players. Multiple-workstation systems can cost as much as $250,000, but DVD Fab! will be priced closer to $120,000, according to Optibase Digital Video Publishing product manager Fabrice Beer-Gabel.

David Taylor, president of Optibase, says the company is aiming to encourage DVD title development among potential users for whom prohibitive costs have been a barrier--specifically, corporate America. "Right now, DVD authoring systems have appeal for high-end users such as Hollywood studios for DVD-Video, but we're hoping to open it up to the next tier down," Taylor says. DVD Fab! is part of this effort to supply an affordable, all-in-one title development solution, Beer-Gabel says. "Many of today's solutions require several workstations connected through networks, with the various duties broken up," Beer-Gabel says. "With DVD Fab!, we want to provide a new generation of developers with a single Windows NT workstation that can do everything."

In DVD Fab!, Optibase's MPEG FusionTM, an MPEG-2 real-time encoder, is integrated with Scenarist, Daikin's professional authoring software. Professional digital inputs, digital filters, and variable bit rate encoding are included to enhance video and audio quality. DVD Fab! also supports a variety of audio formats for DVD creation, and upgrades to multichannel Dolby Digital. The MPEG Organizer allows users to prepare sophisticated batch files to run several hours' encoding of video and audio content.

DVD Fab! is an integrated system, a rack-mountable PC that runs under Windows NT. The system provides a homogeneous working environment and an infrastructure that requires minimal system administration. It supports premastering to either DLT or DVD-R. "Although these components aren't delivered with the system, we ensure their compatibility and they can be connected to the DVD Fab! workstation using the SCSI connector," says Beer-Gabel. DVD-R can be used only when the total volume of the application is below 3.9GB, he adds.
DVD Fab! will be available in the first quarter of 1998. (Optibase, Inc., 5000 Quorum Drive, Suite 700, Dallas, TX 75240; 214/774-3800, 800/451-5101; Fax 214/239-1273; optibase.com)
