The district I was running in was one of the few where the conservatives/Republicans outnumbered the liberals/democrats by about 55/45,60/40?

My opponent was solidly in bed with the oil companies which would like to have all the oil in the state for free. And had been bribing congress people since they got here.

In a small state with so much oil and gas it was a given the oil companies would try to buy votes to keep their taxes at a minimum.

And the oil companies have successfully bought most of the Republican party for the last 35 years. I was hoping I could explain this to the voters and I did beat my incumbent opponent 2 to 1 in the primary because of the debates I won.

When I beat my oppoent 2 to 1, the oil companies (who knew me) got scared I might win. And they knew I could not be bought as they had had to deal with me when I was coordinating the Valdez oil spill for the governors office and the Department of Health and Social Services.

So they poured huge amounts of money into my opponents campaign, and sent investigators to try and find dirt on me. Even phoning my ex wife in another state. Who told them I was a good guy.

Still, he got so much money I could not compete. Money wins elections. I would not take any PAC money as I did not want to owe anyone and be free to vote my conscience.

Most people do not undertand that when a politician takes large amounts of money (any politician, right or left) from anyone, it is legal bribary because the donor expects favors in return including votes on legislation they want.

For the oil companies that always meant the lowest taxes possible. Year before last, Exxon reported the largest profits any corporation has ever reported!
