Your father definitely needs to tell the story of the sword, so it will have extra meaning....and you can write it down for them. While writing that, it dawned on me that I should do that for one of my sisters too...She has the Masonic sword from our Great Uncle...He died in about 1909 (of typhoid of all things) at about 30 years old and never had children, and while she knows it is a Masonic sword, she doesn't know much about him or his life. The old historical papers that are being digitized online has a big front page article (small town) telling of his life and young death. Thanks for the reminder.. One grandfather didn't have many material goods either, but I have his marble collection (many wooden marbles, and some truly beautiful glass ones which are probably worth some money, but no way would I sell them)... Having you say "my Papa's church hat" made me chuckle...My other granddad was a fruit rancher and farmer...He Always had a "Sunday go-to-meeting hat (Stetson)" and his everyday working hat (another Stetson that had seen much wear and tear) His father was an early Sheriff (the second one for a huge County in CO) and most probably all of the men had the same type hats for the same uses. And ahhhhh, gold cufflinks and pearl ones. Wear them yourself, and enjoy! As far aa handing them down, for all sorts of reasons, we've decided to give the old family things directly to our own children. We've seen two divorces that made that decision for us...But for our son and daughter in law, we will make sure we give them something that we ourselves loved, and hope they will as well. What a great idea....Loan them to family for weddings, then back in your care!!! That will add to their legend, and bring more family memories~!
