>>The oil companis (sic) need to be kept in constant check.

The only politician to do that recently was Palin. :-)<<

Yep, she did do that. And in spades. We now get much more money in taxes than before she did it.

But she took on the Republicans to do it and her support came from the dems.

But the story is stranger than that. Her patron was Wally Hickle (about 85) ex governor and eccentric independent wealthy hotel owner. He is a bit of an enigma being a right winger who also puts Alaska before the oil companies.

Taking on the oil companies was his idea and he is the one who gave her her start and the money and a political machine to get her going. He has since disowned her as has almost everyone in both parties in Alaska and the reason she could not coninue as governor.

But her brand of populism wears well up here.

She was a surprise though as she beat a very popular Republican for the nomination. John Binkly. I even liked her before I got to know her.

She had simply made too many enemies to continue governing is part of why she quit. No one likes her now up here as she is mean and dishonest and vindictive. And an opportunist par exellance.

But you are right she increased taxes and Alaska now gets hundreds of millions in increased taxes?
