If the US had looked elsewhere for the solution for this crisis it would not had to return to natural size with a thud.
But the system is inbred. Closed. A introspective sense of national pride that does not allow it to seek new ideas and solutions created elsewhere.

Bretton Woods was about the US as a reserve currency. Not about Gold Standard. Why?

Because the even though the it was owing its underwear paying for the Vietnam war, the US continued to be the reserve currency and the major even though the countries that were inexistent in after the WWII had moved ahead:

It is too sweet to be the reserve currency. Throw in a policeman of the world, dole out goodies to dictators with good behavior and you have a system you could control, to the detriment of the rest of the world. It was out of that situation that the Non Aligned Movement was born not everyone wanted to be lap dog.
The moved ahead as if Bretton Woods was still there.

No one was coming up and say:
Pisst! Look around, Don’t be ridiculous. The world has changed. It needed the Iraq War for the rest of the world to show, new are not putting up with this kind of crap anymore.
