Well, sure, put like that. And Saddam was certainly part of the overall Us vs Them Islamic ideology, like a family feuding but uniting against the outsiders.

It just seemed likely to be a lot of work and carnage for a dubious outcome. But I did think the actual war would be 110 minutes [one Globalstar orbit] with COW casualties of 3,000 I think I guessed as a result of door to door insurrection after the tanks had rolled through and interpersonal relationships had to be established.

Of course my 110 minutes was figurative [meaning really quick] because it takes longer than an hour or two just to get passports checked at the Kuwait border entering Iraq without driving all the way to Baghdad.

The Iraqis surrendered as I expected - waiting until the last moment to spring the attack then surrendering as soon as possible as the Iraqi commanders went white and started running for it.

Not many were going to lay their lives down for Saddam, Uday and co. Being in the Iraqi army was a cushy number [unless Saddam decided something stupid like an attack on Iran, or Kuwai or taking on the COW].
