If Republicans championed a Balanced Budget Amendment the liberal media would never report it. If they did it would be caricatured as an evil draconian risk to the prosperity of America. If a tree fall in the forest and nobody is there to hear it did it make a noise? If a politician calls for prudent action and the media fails to report it did he actually accomplish anything?

I don't consider it stupid party tricks. Restraining spending is more important that a balanced budget amendment (esp. considering likely ways around an amendment that could get passed, and considering that restraint on spending will help balance the budget, and that a balanced budget amendment without such restraint, to the extent its effective, is a "tax and tax some more amendment"). This particular proposal to restrain spending is not nearly as big as a balanced budget amendment, but the idea behind it is the right one, and something like this is much more likely to get passed.
