Front running is also illegal and extremely profitable,
but 2009 saw about 3/4 of all volume coming from
high-frequency trading, a modern version of front running.
Little wonder trading profits are high - you can't lose
front running orders! The machines basically sniff out
all orders then front run them automatically, so that
other folks get the worst fill possible. "Within milliseconds"
means that when your order comes, front runners will sniff it
out, bid up the price for the fill if it's a buy order, then
drop it again. WS finally discovered a cash machine. Of
course, it was known before under a different name -g-

"High frequency traders use computers that execute trades within
milliseconds, or "with extremely low latency" in the jargon of
the trade. In the U.S., high-frequency trading firms represent
2.0% of the approximately 20,000 firms operating today, but
account for 73.0% of all equity trading volume."
