Good post, Allen. Of course I agree with everything you say. In fact, I keep thinking perhaps the time is right for a new insurance company to be born....a company that specializes in catastrophic policies and markets them nationally. In this wonderful computer age of ours, every scrap of data to build reliable actuarial models is out there.

The government could do this so easily, although my confidence in government is shaken right now. OTOH, a private company could do it just as easily with adequate funding. Maybe the government could even be the source of the funding....a joint venture.

As you said, Medicare is somewhat like this. It doesn't cover dental or vision needs, but the retired can purchase separate private policies for these things. The big problem I see is that the public is still so misinformed, and Dems utterly failed to educate voters on how a hybrid system of health insurance could work out well for everyone.
