Balance of nature and teleological theory can't both be true.

The old idea of the cosmos as a static entity was the balance of nature theory. That was debunked with the red shift and the inflationary cosmos and black hole Big Bang theories.

I'm in the teleological camp = we don't know where we're going but we're on our way. There are billion year trends which are obviously part of the chain of causal relationships which are as certainly leading somewhere as a rock falling off a cliff is leading somewhere. Gravity is implacable, relentless and far reaching. The other 3 forces are also busy, day and night. Consciousness as the fifth force of the cosmos is well established.

A cursory look at Earth's history shows Earth is not and never has been in balance. It's a one way trip with a depleting and changing atmosphere and the sun has heated up 30% or so. There was a huge amount of CO2 in the air, but plants and their tragedy of the commons have reduced it to homeopathic levels.
