Re: "there's only 40 repubs in the senate, how could they kill a bill ??? explain that"

Easy!

There are always a couple-to-plenty of Democrats who SUPPORT ENDLESS DEFICIT SPENDING TOO!

In *this example* though 53 of the Dems managed to screw-up enough courage to vote to really reduce the deficits, (and one more said he supported it but wasn't present so who knows about him?)

"Super Majority" rules mean they needed 60 votes to shut off filibusters and move the legislation.

However... there is ONE Republican Senator (actually: Senator-to-be) who claims to have the balls to vote for this: and that's the newly elected but not yet sworn in Republican Senator from MA.

(However, I suppose it's easy enough to SAY you "would have" taken a hard vote if you had only "been there". <g>)

He's still saying that though....

(What blows my mind though is all of the GOP Senators who were previously ON THE RECORD as saying they were "for" this bipartisan proposal to reduce the federal deficits --- some like McCain just a week or two ago!)

I suppose they were (wink, wink... nudge, nudge...) "for it" just so long as they thought it wouldn't pass anyway, but when it looked like it *MIGHT HAVE ENOUGH SUPPORT TO PASS* and actually slash the deficit they flipped like a line of burgers at Mickie-Dees.

(Suppose they were 'whipped' into line by their leadership... probably more interesting in having some good rhetoric to run on in the Fall's elections then they were in ACTUALLY doing anything to reduce deficits.)

Sad, sad day for Congress and the nation.
